The Chair for Language Acquisition and Language Teaching (Sprachlehr- und -lernforschung) is first and foremost responsible for the training of future teachers of English, French and Russian at the primary and early secondary level. This means that many of the Chair's teaching activities take place in the framework of the teacher training courses organised through the Erfurt School of Education (Magister Lehramtstudiengänge). The fact that the Chair Professor is also the Director of the Language Center offers good collaborative possibilities for improving the general level of English, French and Russian skills of future language teachers in Thüringen. At the BA-level the types of courses offered through the Chair mainly have to do with language development in children, bilingualism and second language learning. Many of the courses on offer are also open to students in Linguistics. All courses taught by Professor De Houwer are fully in English. The research carried out as part of the Chair activities concerns first and second language acquisition, and is embedded in the Erfurt University Research Group Sprachbeherrschung.
