Captivated gazes - film posters from the 1920s

From 24 November 2023 to 4 February 2024, the Erfurt University Library will be showing an exhibition of posters from the early days of cinema entitled "Gefesselte Blicke". The 14 originals and 25 facsimiles focus on gender relations in the 1920s. An exhibition catalogue by students of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the University of Erfurt will be published on the occasion of the V Weimar Silent Film Retrospective "In Praise of the Play of Light" as part of the Weimar Art Festival 2023.

Visually orientated mass media celebrated its breakthrough in the 1920s. However, most of the films from the early days of cinema have not survived and today only their colourful posters convey the diversity of film culture at the time. The exhibition "Captivated Glances" shows a selection of these historical large formats, together with other advertising material from the films.

The selection of posters thematises the representation of gender relations in the 1920s. On display are images of women ranging from the glamorous "lady with the mask" to the unfortunate "found bird". The project helps to ensure that this legacy of European film culture remains anchored in the collective memory of our society. A virtual exhibition on the German National Library's online portal documents the findings in a sustainable way and also makes them accessible to a wider audience beyond Thuringia.

The exhibition is based on a co-operation between the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the University of Erfurt.

Annemarie Schimmel in Turkey: Showcase exhibition on the 2nd floor until 12 July 2023

Annemarie Schimmel mit Pferden

The renowned orientalist Annemarie Schimmel, born in Erfurt in 1922, travelled almost literally all over the world in her long life. A showcase exhibition on the 2nd floor is dedicated to her encounter with Turkey, where from 1954 to 1959 she was the first woman to hold a chair in the history of religion at the Faculty of Theology in Ankara. Later, too, she travelled frequently to Turkey and received numerous awards "in recognition and [...] thanks for her valuable work in researching and promoting Turkish culture", as it says on a certificate of honour from the Turkish Republic (on display in the exhibition!). Since Annemarie Schimmel bequeathed part of her estate to the University of Erfurt - in addition to books, her orders and decorations as well as the corresponding correspondence - the theme is illustrated by such. In addition, there are books from her own possession and text passages from her autobiography(Morgenland und Abendland: mein west-östliches Leben: BE 8607 S335 M8), which bring "Annemarie Schimmel in der Türkei" to life.

The story of this painting is told in the exhibition ...

"Griffelkunst" spring exhibition 2023

In the foyer of the University Library, the images of the spring election of "Griffelkunst" will be on display. Along with contemporary prints, historical photographs by Fred Koch and others will be on display.

The great attraction of the plant photographs lies in the depiction of the forms. Nowhere will you get more pleasure from them than here, but nowhere is there a greater danger of overlooking them (Fred Koch, 1904 - 1947).
