Leave of absence

Students may submit a formal request (using a form available online and at the registrar’s office (“Studium und Lehre” department) to take a leave of absence for good cause* from their degree program. A leave of absence may be granted for one semester and can be extended for one additional semester if necessary. Compulsory military service, civil service, and maternity/paternity leave do not count toward the two-semester total.

A leave of absence cannot be retroactively granted for completed semesters.

Regulations for leave of absence

(According to § 10 Matriculation Regulations of the University of Erfurt in the version of 7 May 2015)

1. A leave of absence may be granted if a good cause is proved. Good causes includes:

  • Military or civil service
  • Illness (upon submission of a doctor’s note)
  • Maternity and parental leave (please submit documentation)
  • Care of close relatives
  • Study-related stay abroad
  • Work on the student assembly or on a university committee
  • Mandatory internship

2. Students are allowed to take a total fo two leaves of absence (two semesters) per degree programme (except in cases of illness, maternity and parental leave).

3. A leave of absence may be granted for the duration of one semester.

4. In an undergraduate degree program, a leave of absence in the first semester is only possible for the following reasons: military or civil service, illness, maternity and parental care.

5. The request should be submitted in the re-registration deadline (except in the case of military or civil service, illness, maternity and parental care).

6. A retroactive leave of absence for a completed semester is not possible.

7. Semesters of leave of absence count as total university semester, not as semester.

8. During the leave of absence it is generally not possible to pursue examinations. Students who are on leave for maternity or parental care may take up to 21 credits.

Further notes

Semester contribution / semester ticket:

Students who request a leave of absence within the re-registration period have not to pay the semester contribution. After the re-registration deadline, a refund of the semester contribution is only possible if the request for leave of absence is submitted before the semester begins.

During a leave semester, the semester ticket can not be used.

Exams
During the leave of absence it is generally not possible to pursue examinations. Students who are on leave for maternity or parental care may take up to 21 credits.

BAföG
In the semester of leave no BAföG is paid!

Health insurance during a leave of absence
During a leave of absence, the statutory health insurance remains. The statutory health insurance is therefore still required for a study-related stay abroad. This also applies if an additional (possibly private) health insurance is taken out.
