EIPCC, IDOS and GIGA researchers convene in Bonn

Connecting with people from different fields fuels academic ideas and enhances interdisciplinary research, and the EIPCC Graduate Centre knows it well. This year, our retreat included collaboration with two organizations where we got to know some of their ongoing research projects: the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS) and the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA).

On November 7-8, PhD students, postdocs, and professors from the EIPCC Graduate Centre, IDOS, and GIGA met in Bonn. At IDOS facilities, we discussed and exchanged insights on timely global topics, such as digitalization and its impact on the economy and democracy. We also focused on enhancing the skills of our junior researchers, covering topics such as publishing in academic journals and scientific blogs.

On the first day, after introductory presentations from the institutions involved, we engaged in some interesting and informal “ice-breaking” activities, where we got to know each other and discussed individual challenges we face in academia. Later, Professor Achim Kemmerling from EIPCC, Professor Mariana Llanos from EIPCC and GIGA, Dr. Anita Breuer, and Dr. Benedikt Erforth, both from IDOS, gave presentations and overviews of their current projects under the theme of “Democratic Governance in the Era of Twin Transitions.”

On Friday morning, we continued our retreat with a session focusing on academic publishing. Professor Andreas Goldthau (EIPCC) and Dr. Jasmin Lorch (IDOS) shared their insights and experiences with publishing in academic journals. In the second morning session, Dr. Christoph Sommer (IDOS), Alina Ripplinger (EIPCC/GIGA), Evans Awuni (EIPCC/GIGA), and Mauricio Boehl (IDOS) presented some of their research project results. After lunch, in a session led by Dr. Git Mwonzora (EIPCC) and Dr. Wendpanga (IDOS), we learned how to translate academic research into policy and blog material.

Finally, we concluded the retreat with light-hearted Pecha Kucha presentations. Afterwards, some of us had to part ways, but we are already looking forward to next year’s retreat with an even more innovative and thought-provoking agenda!
