Under the motto "Participation - Resilience - Innovation. How does the University succeed in the 21st century?", the University of Erfurt invites its members to its first Dies Academicus.

Programme

We want to talk. With each other. About the changing university. About what defines us as the University of Erfurt and what inspires us and brings us forward. We want to look at the status quo, as well as at developments and what we as a university can take away from the crises of the recent past and the strategies for overcoming them.

A university lives from all its parts. That is why we expressly invite all members of the university to the so called "Dies Academicus". From 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., we want to come together - for keynotes on the topics of democracy as well as innovation, and for casual opportunities to get to know each other, network, and share ideas. We would like to work in small groups and invite you to learn more about digitalization, resilience, sustainable action, participatory curriculum development, democracy and participation, and diversity and equality in various formats. We want to complement theoretical impulses, e.g. on the topic of democracy and participation, in a practical way; be it through the student plenary assembly taking place on this day or the opportunity to get to know your representatives in the committees and interest groups. Overall, we would like to use the impulses of this day to discuss together how university succeeds in the 21st century.

  • 8.00 - 9.00 a.m. Kick-off: Breakfast together (Mensa)
  • 9.00-10.00 Keynote 1 (Opening plenary): Radikalität und Ermattung - Die Pole der Partizipationsdebatte und was dazwischen liegt (Radicalism and weariness - The poles of the participation debate and what lies in between) Prof. Dr. Pasternack (Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg)
  • 13.00-14.00 Keynote 2 (Lunch plenary): Erste Einschätzungen zum Einsatz Generativer KI an der Hochschule (First assessments on the use of generative AI at higher education) Prof. Dr. Robert Jung (University of Hohenheim)
  • 17.00-19.00 Concluding panel discussion and summary of the day How does university succeed in the 21st century?
    Chair: Julia Knop
    Panel: N.N.
  • followed by a joint evening

We would like to cordially invite everyone to the two keynote speeches, which will provide the impetus for the topics in the morning and at lunchtime. After the keynote speeches, the morning (10 am - 1 pm) and afternoon (2 pm - 3 pm) slots will offer the opportunity to discuss the topics of democracy/participation, innovation and resilience in more detail in various workshops, lectures and other events. The day will be framed by a joint breakfast in the refectory (at the participants' own expense) and the concluding panel discussion.

You will find the detailed programme on the Dies Academicus website.

What is a Dies Academicus?

Dies Academicus - Latin for "academic day" - refers to an academic holiday on which regular teaching is interrupted. The non-teaching holiday is common at many universities and is often celebrated on the founding date or a date important to the university. In addition to award ceremonies or alumni reunions, this day can also be used for a joint identity-building programme.

In its meeting on 8 February 2023, the Senate of the University of Erfurt decided to hold a Dies Academicus on 7 June. The organisation is the responsibility of a working group formed from the Senate.
