An edition of the essential works of the Baroque scholar and physician Thomas Browne (1605-1682) has been published in December 2022. Browne was one of the most linguistically powerful writers in English and possessed an alert sense for everything offbeat and outlandish; he devised an imaginary cabinet of curiosities, formulated a melancholy meditation on funeral rites, or searched for the hidden matrix of creation in the "Garden of Cyrus."

Judith Schalansky, the editor of these writings translated by Manfred Pfister, has accordingly made the volume the first in her new series "Wild Knowledge" published by Matthes & Seitz. Schalansky, who is a writer herself and has also lavishly designed the volume, will talk about her experiences with Thomas Browne at the event in Gotha: What resonance emerged between his and her wild thinking? She will also read some passages from the book.

The book launch will take place on February 2 at 5:15 p.m. in the lecture hall of the Gotha Research Centre. Registration by e-mail at forschungszentrum.gotha@uni-erfurt.de is requested.
