Perthes in Conversation: Photographs in "Petermanns Geographische Mitteilungen"

For the last time this year, the Gotha Research Library of the University of Erfurt invites you to its "Perthes in Conversation" series, in which it regularly reports on the latest results in the cataloguing, preservation and research of the Gotha Perthes Collection. The event will take place on Wednesday, 6 December. It starts at 6 pm in the "Ahnensaal" of the Perthes Forum in Gotha.

On this evening, art historian Hannes Friese will talk about the influences and consequences of the invention of photographic processes on and for the development of modern cartography.

At the end of the 19th century, many explorers had a camera in their luggage. But around 1900, the role of photography for geographical science had not yet been clarified. The photographic view stood in tense contrast to the cartographic overview. In his lecture, Hannes Friese traces the long path that led landscape photography to the pages of "Petermanns Geographische Mitteilungen". He will discuss the numerous challenges for a geographical approach to photographic images.

All interested parties are cordially invited, admission is free. Following the lecture, the Friends of the Gotha Research Library invite you to a small reception.
