Student Projects

Here we will report on student projects that deal with international comparative questions and/or global phenomena in communication. The projects are individual written thesis or final papers which have been developed in the course of seminars. 

06/2019 | Fragile Democracies: The role of the media in Somalia and Ethiopia - Student Presentation

Mufutau Muyiwa and Rachael Akalusi examined fragile democracies (Somalia and Ethiopia) within the context of socio-political realities (polarization, pluralism and participation); access to information, especially in the digital landscape; the role of the media in nation building and the variables which enhance or constrain the media in the pursuit of its natural obligations.

06/2019 | Hybrid Democracies: Freedom of Expression during elections - Student Presentation

First year MA Global Communication students Dilara Ekinci and Nina Prange held a presentation in the seminar „Media and Political Transformation in International Comparative Perspective“ (Prof. Dr. Kai Hafez) on the role of the media in hybrid democracies with a special focus on freedom of expression during elections with the example of Turkey. Their presentation gave insights into characteristics of hybrid regimes and the role of press freedom, media ownership and media manipulation in election communication.
