Collections: Historical Stocks and Collections of the Research Library Gotha

The Gotha Research Library preserves a unique fundus of manuscripts, old prints and maps. It is one of the most important German libraries with historical book collections.

Among the approximately 694,000 preserved works are:

  • more than 11,500 occidental and oriental manuscripts
  • approximately 350,000 prints of the 15th to 19th century
  • 185,000 single maps and 800 linear meters of archivals of the Perthes collection.

The research library includes special collections and Private Libraries:

  • Ducal Collection: Library of the Court of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg,
  • Gymnasial Collection: 1596 donated book collection of the Gotha Gymnasium Illustre (since 1859 Ernestinum Gymnasium)

The majority of the prints can be found via the library catalogue. Some of the works from the 18th and 19th century, however, are so far only recorded in the handwritten and printed catalogues.
