Welcome to the Gotha Research Library

Prints from the 16th Century

In the research library there are about 24,800 printed books published from 1501 up to 1600.
They mostly come from the Ducal and the Gymnasial Collection.

These include:

  • theological works,
  • historical writings,
  • polemics,
  • hymnals and
  • sermon literature.

The dukes of Gotha collected works about the history of Lutheranism and other writings created in the context of the Reformation as well as works for the reception of the Reformation.

The percentage of Latin works is around 60%, the percentage of German 30%, the rest comes from other European languages.

  • The majority of the prints are researchable in the online-catalogue.
  • In addition, the works printed in the German language area (about 75%) are developed  in the VD16 catalogue. The prints of the FB can be selected "stock" by entering "VD075" in the setting.

The prints can be viewed in the Special Reading Room.
