Conservation and Organisation of the Map Collection

Project Start: 2006 End of Project: 2012

The map collection was in a condition of advanced deterioration due to improper storage and lack of conservation care. To a large extent, the cards were covered with a layer of dirt, and also with a hazardous fine dust pollution. The aim is to make the collection available to science and public again.

Funded by the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt an initial phase of a trial method for dry cleaning was developed from 2006 to 2008. The method is based on the construction of a machine, which ensures by means of electrostatic effects, an effective and gentle cleaning of physically less sturdy map sheets.

Linked to the development of the purification process is the conception of a documentation system in the form of a computerized database that controls the cleaning and sorting process and documents and will now form the basis of the management and further development of the card stock. These purified cards are available on request.

Conservation and Development of the Publishing Production and the Publishing Library Perthes

Project Start: 2007; Project End: 2011

From 2007 to 2008, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft supported the cataloguing of specimen copies from the traditional collection of the publishing production into the databases of the Joint Library Network (GVK catalogue and map database ICAR). Subsequently, the geographic-cartographic specialist library and the editorial library of  the Gotha Hofkalender have been developed since 2008 into a project also supported by the DFG. Before the gathering by the library, comprehensive measures of conservation are made. The conservation secure inventory is catalogued while maintaining the historical classification system. The stocks are listed in the Common Union Catalogue in IKAR and in the online-catalogue of the University and Research Library Erfurt / Gotha, which also allows provenance search, researchable, and can be used in the special reading room of the Research Library.
