Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg was the largest and partially politically and economically most important Ernestine duchy in the 18th Century. Led by an enlightened approach, the reform measures altered - as in other duchies also - the infrastructure of the agrarian state. Its centre was the residence city of Gotha, which was ith about 11,200 inhabitants in 1781, the second largest city in Thuringia. Their centre formed beyond the narrow national boundaries well-known Gotha court, literary and artistically and scientifically interested, with a special focus on the French Enlightenment.

During the creation of the Duchy in the 17th Century the ducal library was built and opened publicly in the early 18th Century. In addition to the court library, which has been continuously extended to include relics like medieval manuscripts and incunabula, the Gotha duchesses and dukes cultivated private book collections that included 600-10,000 titles.

They were integrated into the court library at the beginning of the 19th Century. The 25,000 printed and handwritten works from these libraries form an impressive testimony of the former cultural and scientific flowering in Gotha. Transmitted are the mostly handwritten catalogues of private libraries created by the librarians of the Court Library.
