Mourning for Doreen Hochberg

The University of Erfurt mourns the loss of Doreen Hochberg, who passed away on 9 May 2022. She was last employed at the University Computing and Media Centre, where she was part of the TYPO3 team.

She had her first day of work at the University of Erfurt on 1 April 1998 - at the Max-Weber-Kolleg, which also opened on that day. With her cheerful manner, her helpfulness, her great commitment and collegiality, she not only made it easier for the doctoral students there, who were also the first students at the newly founded university, to start their academic careers. She was also an important support for the fellows and guest researchers of the Max-Weber-Kolleg, especially in dealing with modern information technology. Over the years, she remained in contact with many of them. Barbara Thériault, for example, who received her doctorate at the Max-Weber-Kolleg and is now a professor in Montréal, Canada, remembers well the infectious verve of Doreen Hochberg, with whom she had an enduring friendship: "Doreen was a fantastic friend and gave me many insights into the lives of down-to-earth people in Erfurt."

Sociologist Professor Shmuel Eisenstadt from Jerusalem, one of the Kolleg's first visiting scholars, gratefully referred to her as one of his "Erfurt Angels" who helped him organise his research - and also solve some of his everyday problems.

With her creative skills, Doreen Hochberg had a considerable share in the public relations work of the Max-Weber-Kolleg. She regularly and curiously acquired new qualifications for this - including knowledge of Latin to better support fellows who used many Latin quotations in their publications.

After a serious illness, she then moved to the Typo3 team at the University Computing and Media Centre in 2020. There, Doreen Hochberg worked on the relaunch of the university website and later also supported its expansion and further development.

With her, we are not only losing a highly valued employee, but also a lovely colleague and a wonderful person. We will miss her. Our thoughts remain with her. Our sympathy goes to her relatives.
