Research Project

„Multi-flame bronze lamps of the High and Late Middle Ages in a ritual context“

Although lighting devices were an essential part of Jewish and Christian ritual in the Middle Ages, it is still largely a research desideratum. Using the example of the multi-flame bronze lamps of the High and Late Middle Ages, of which an outstanding example has been preserved in the Erfurt Cathedral, the project will examine the relationship between the typology, genesis and function of these lamps, which have been handed down both materially and visually, and the rituals of Jews and Christians of their time.
