Fundamentals of Mathematics in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages

A new publication has appeared at the Wissenschaftliche Buchgesellschaft (wbg): Boethius' "Arithemetics" as a bilingual edition, introduced, edited and translated by Kai Brodersen.

Boëthius, probably the most important scholar of late antiquity, created a standard mathematical work around 500 AD with his "Arithmetics". The work had an enormous influence on the medieval and early modern educational canon. It was to remain the authoritative introduction to number theory for a millennium.

Kai Brodersen, Professor of Ancient Culture at the University of Erfurt, has now presented Boethius' "Arithmetic" for the first time in a bilingual German translation. With this and 16 colour illustrations from the codex with which the grandson of Emperor Charles the Great learned Mathematics, the ancient world of numbers becomes accessible to today's readers for the first time.
