One of the central questions for doctoral students organizing their research work is funding during the time of their doctorate. Doctoral students have various options for financing their living expenses. The most common financing models for the multi-year phase of the doctorate are

Funding formats of the University of Erfurt

Doctoral Scholarships

The University of Erfurt awards scholarships to gain a doctorate. The funds for scholarships come from the university's budget or additionally from the Thuringian State Graduate Fund. Once a year, a number of scholarships are awarded for outstanding doctoral projects within the EPPP-certified graduate centres at the University of Erfurt.

Monthly funding amount: 1,400 euros (plus supplements if applicable)
Duration of funding: 3 years of basic funding + 1 year extension on application (+ a possible further extension due to childcare, family responsibilities, disability or serious chronic illness).
Announcement/application: As a rule, the application period is from 1 August to 30 September. Information on the eligibility requirements and application documents to be submitted can be found in the information sheet under Graduate Service.

Completion Scholarships

Completion scholarships serve to bridge the transition between the submission of the dissertation and the final examination or disputation. Graduation scholarships are available to doctoral students who are in the final phase of their doctorate and whose doctoral procedure has been opened at the University of Erfurt.

Monthly funding amount: 1,000 euros (plus supplements if applicable)
Duration of funding: a maximum of 3 months

Please note: 
From 01.01.2021, until further notice, completion scholarships can only be awarded to persons who started a doctoral scholarship at the University of Erfurt (Christoph-Martin-Wieland or Landesgraduate Scholarship) before 10.05.2018. Scholarship holders who started their doctoral scholarship after May 10, 2018, have received or may receive an extension of the regular duration of their scholarship in accordance with the amendment to the Thuringian Higher Education Act (ThürHG). They therefore do not (no longer) have the opportunity to apply for a completion scholarship.

Graduation Grant for International Doctoral Students funded by DAAD German Academic Exchange Service

With the graduation grant international doctoral students are supported in their final phase of their dissertation. The scholarship is intended to allow students to fully concentrate and focus on the completion of the dissertation.

Monthly funding amount: 1.100 euros
Duration of funding: 3 months
