Project description

Jewish rituals are – as all rituals – nothing static. They change throughout times and especially when they come into contact with other cultures and contexts. The Research Centre “Dynamics of Jewish Ritual Practices in Pluralistic Contexts from Antiquity to the Present” investigates these processes focusing on the developments and dynamic changes of Jewish rituals, especially during the times when they interact with Christian rituals. The timeframe studied ranges from the destruction of the Jerusalem temple by the Romans through modern times. The Research Centre works comparatively and interdisciplinary to investigate a) “ritualizations” after the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple and the Bar Kochba revolt, b) “intellectualizations”during the times when Jewish thinkers came in touch with Christian and Islamic thought during the 17th and 18th centuries, and c) “translations and transmission” in regard to liturgies and music in the synagogue under the conditions of migration and globalization from the 18th through the 21st century.
One focus of the work of the Research Centre is the local intermingling of religious practices, the attempts to distinguish between religions, and the intellectual connections between those who per-form or experience rituals in their traditions. “Ritual” is understood in the sense of ritualized religious practices including liturgical acts as well as ritualized acts such as the reading and studying or Tora or Talmud.
