In the summer of 2025, the world will come together in Germany to celebrate sport, science and culture at one of the world's largest multi-sport events. The Rhine Ruhr region will host the FISU World University Games. Around 8,500 top student athletes from up to 150 countries are expected from 16 to 27 July. Similar to the Olympic Games, a flame relay through Germany is intended to draw attention to the mega-event in the summer. The flame was lit in Turin in January and will now stop in Erfurt on 24 April on its way to the Rhine Ruhr region.

The flame will be passed on every 300 metres or so along the approximately six-kilometre route through the city. Each Erfurt university will provide two to three torch runners for the short stages, as well as accompanying runners who will complete the entire route. The runners will start at 4 p.m. in front of the library on campus of the University of Erfurt in the direction of the town hall, where Lord Mayor Andreas Horn will join the torch relay team at 4:30 p.m. A photo call is planned here, to which representatives of the press are cordially invited. The runners will then continue to the HMU am Anger, the iba, the IU and the Erfurt University of Applied Sciences. After the flame arrives at the university, there will be a runners' party with all participants at around 6 p.m., marking the end of the event.
