Course Details

The Master's program in Literary Studies enables an interdisciplinary study of literature in the context of other sign practices and media. It is aimed at graduates of bachelor's programmes in literary studies as well as media and cultural studies with a focus on literary studies and an interest in processes of production, change and disturbance of meaning that are emerging or taking place in literature and other forms of representation and media.

Career changers from media and cultural studies and philosophy are also welcome.

Literary Studies in Detail

Structure of the study program

The Master of Literary Studies is acquired by completing modules of 90 credit points (LP), which cover the entire study phase (1st - 3rd semester), and the Master's thesis (30 LP).

Admissions qualification

  • an above-average degree from a relevant university course in literary studies, individual philologies, e.g. media or cultural studies (focus on literary studies) of at least six semesters standard period of study (final grade 2.3 or better)

Access is also open to graduates of cultural studies, philosophy or media studies who wish to expand their literary and analytical skills through a compact postgraduate course. In this case, the special motivation for the course of study must be explained to the Master's program officer.

Language requirements

Language entry requirement is proof of two modern foreign languages at level B1 of the European Frame of Reference by the end of the course of study, in accordance with the examination regulations of the University of Erfurt for language studies. The languages to be proven depend on the chosen program focus.

Language Center

The Language Centre (Sprachenzentrum) offers around 140 language courses per semester in 16 modern and ancient (foreign) languages. It supports you in acquiring and deepening your language skills.
