Enrolment in PhD programs

Doctoral studies are possible at the University of Erfurt in the :

  • Faculty of Philosophy
  • Faculty of Economics, Law and Social Sciences
  • Faculty of Education
  • Faculty of Catholic Theology and the
  • Max Weber College

At the beginning of a doctoral project, an application for acceptance as a PhD candidate must be submitted to the respective faculty according to the respective doctoral regulations.

Upon acceptance as a PhD candidate, the student status and thus the membership of the university can be acquired. For this purpose, please submit the application for enrolment in the PhD program via the online application portal. Please note the documents to be submitted in the instructions concerning the request for admission to PhD program.

How do I enrol?

What are the deadlines?

After acceptance as a doctoral student, enrolment can be applied at any time.

The enrolment application for the PhD program must be submitted by

  • 31st March for a winter semester
  • 30th September for a summer semester

How do I register online?

1. complete the online enrolment

Please submit your application for enrolment online via the application portal of the University of Erfurt. Please fill out the online form carefully and only use "Back" and "Next" to navigate within the form and not the buttons of your browser.

The number of electronic data entries is not limited. However, only one signed application for enrolment can be processed.

As part of the enrolment process at the University of Erfurt, personal data is collected and stored. Before filling out the online form, therefore, please note the following information:
Information in accordance with Art. 13 EU-DSGVO on the collection, processing and use of personal data in the context of admission and enrolment procedures.

2. get your applicant number and print application form

After completing the electronic data entry, you will receive your applicant number and password for the applicant portal. Please use your applicant number if you have any questions.

Furthermore, the application form is now available as a PDF document. Please print this out twice (the second printout is for your records). On the first page of your application form you will find your personal login data again.

3. sign the application and attach documents

Please sign the application form and enclose all required documents (see  instructions concerning the request for admission to PhD program.). 

Your application will be evaluated on the basis of the information you provide and the documents submitted by post.

4. send your application

Send the printed and signed application form together with the required documents to

Please ensure that you have an sufficient amount of postage.

5. photo upload

Your student identity card (chip card) requires your photo. You have to upload this before enrolment via the online application portal. You will find your personal login data on the first page of the printed online application. You can also check the status of your application at any time via the online application portal.

What documents are required?

The required documents for enrolment are listed in the instructions concerning the request for admission to PhD program.

What follows after enrolment?

Once you have submitted all the required documents and you fulfil the admission requirements for a PhD program at the University of Erfurt, we will enrol you. You will receive your first student datasheet together with your student ID (chip card) by post. On the datasheet you will also find your e-mail adress of the University of Erfurt and your user name for your university account.

You will receive your initial password for your university account in a separate letter from the University Computer and Media Centre. The initial password is preset for the university account and the email account and must be changed in the first place. For your user account, the change is made via the user portal and for the email account via the web-based log in. For further information please refer to the help pages for the user account.

Once you have completed your registration, you will be a member of the University of Erfurt at the beginning of the semester.

Please note that your student card (thoska) must be validated by you before your first assignment. You can do this on your first visit to campus.
