Opening lecture by Dorothee Kimmich for the lecture series "Gärten: Geschichte, Gestalt, Zukunft" in the summer semester 2021. The event will be streamed on Youtube.

The garden of the ancient philosopher Epicurus was located a little below the Acropolis in Athens. Up to 100 people lived there together. We no longer know what the garden looked like. However, the rules and ideas according to which the small community organised its coexistence are known and have had great success - often without people knowing where they came from.  The garden stands for peaceful togetherness, for withdrawal from the busy world, for the search for a fulfilled life and the renunciation of ambition, career, great fortune and craving for recognition. In the garden, a happy life should become possible.

The lecture presents the central role of this place for Epicurean philosophy and traces its worldwide impact.

In the summer semester of 2021, the University of Erfurt and the University of Applied Sciences will once again jointly organise a public lecture series - due to Corona as an online event. This time the topic will be "Gärten: Geschichte, Gestalt, Zukunft" and is deliberately planned as a kind of supporting event for the BUGA 2021 in Erfurt.
