Exams in the summer semester are held online

The University of Erfurt will conduct the examinations as online examinations in the summer semester 2020. The university management had already informed about this. Today the Vice-President for Academic Affairs, Prof. Dr. Gerd Mannhaupt, explained the plans in more detail in another letter to the lecturers.

In order to enable the online exams, several modules must be completed and put together:

  • The Thuringian state parliament has to pass the Corona shell law.
  • On this basis, the University of Erfurt must adopt a statute which enables and regulates the implementation of modified examination formats.
  • Suitable software must be found and acquired.
  • A data protection impact assessment must be conducted and documented for electronic examinations.

Two modules are available today, and work is currently in the final phase on two modules: The Corona shell law has been passed. The university has acquired the license for the examination software WISEflow and is currently setting it up. The university's statutes were read and discussed in the senate last week and are currently in the voting process. A team has already met twice for the data protection impact assessment and the positive conclusion of the procedure is also expected soon.

This means that both the legal and technical prerequisites will be available for the electronic examinations in the summer semester 2020, i.e. from 13.7.2020. The focus will be on the electronically conducted distance exams, which will enable students to write their exams under supervision at home, provided they have a computer with a webcam and a reasonably reasonable Internet connection. However, both the submission of written papers via WISEflow and the conduct of oral distance examinations can be realized with WISEflow.

Using the software is not very complicated, but requires instruction. Due to the high time pressure, two of these briefings of the teachers / examiners have to take place online this week. For those colleagues who will be conducting electronic distance exams, instruction in the design of the questions and the compilation of questions for exams will take place on Wednesday, June 17, from 12 to 2 p.m. under the following link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83916120322. The aim of the workshop is to provide the participants with the knowledge required to create and design exam questions and tasks in WISEflow. They will be trained in the relevant question types and tasks so that they can plan and conduct the exams they have chosen in WISEflow.

The second workshop with the topics of setting up, managing and conducting the actual exams will take place on Thursday, June 18, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and can be reached under the following link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81518866294. The aim of this workshop is to provide the participants with the knowledge necessary to create procedures in WISEflow (the framework for each exam conducted in WISEflow).

With the knowledge gained from the two workshops, the teachers should be able to prepare electronic remote exams in terms of content and form. On Wednesday, July 1, from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m., the topics evaluation and feedback will be dealt with, i.e. the participants will learn how to evaluate and comment on the contributions submitted by the students in WISEflow. The following link leads to this: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88391803795.

Of course, the "Taskforce Digital Teaching" will also provide a topic block with all relevant notes, information and documents for the electronic exams in the moodle room "Online-Lehre-Sommer-2020" (OLS2020) and will be available for your questions. For those colleagues who cannot attend one of the two workshops, the necessary information will be available in the moodle room.

Students will also receive a supplementary e-mail on the electronic examination formats.

Update June, 17
Today, the first workshop on WISEflow took place and due to the limitation to 100 participants, unfortunately not all interested people could follow it. We will get a recording of the workshop and will make it available in the moodle room "Online Teaching Summer-2020" (OLS2020).

In addition, WISEflow is now also available for teachers whose university e-mail address and university account is activated via E.L.V.I.S. The following link will take you directly to the login to the WISEflow portal: http://de.wiseflow.net/uni-erfurt. You can then log in with the eduGAIN_Verfahren and will be forwarded to the shiboleth portal of the University of Erfurt. The login procedure is then the usual one. If employees who are not teaching staff also require WISEflow access, you can inform us by sending an e-mail to vpsul@uni-erfurt.de.
