Study and teaching

Can I finish or still start my internship?

Compulsory internships during studies that do not take place at the university can be continued, but the continuation is at the discretion of the respective internship provider.

Please also note the Website of Erfurt School of Education.

Are there currently still consultation hours in the institutions or with the professors?

Consultation hours should be up-to-date, if possible, by telephone or video conference, or by e-mail exchange. If a presence is required, the current hygiene and distance regulations must be observed.

Do I have to pay semester fees for the next semester?

Yes, without the receipt of the semester fee no re-registration is possible. If you have any questions, please contact the Department 1: Registrar‘s Office by phone or e-mail.

What opportunities does the University of Erfurt offer for digital teaching formats?

The Vice-President for Academic Affairs presented the possibilities of digital teaching formats to all teachers in a circular letter.

We have compiled the most important information about digital teaching at the University of Erfurt on a new website.

Are there extensions of the doctoral periods, scholarships or positions?

An extension of the doctoral period must be discussed with the respective supervisors and cannot be regulated by the Presidium, which is, however, happy to promote uncomplicated solutions in the various committees and conferences.

The extension of funding means two things: On the one hand, it may involve the extension of posts. The Federal Government has announced that it will modify the "Wissenschaftszeitgesetz" (Law on the Temporary Employment of Researchers) and make it possible to extend posts for employees. However, the text of the law, which the university management will then discuss with the faculties, is not yet available. Presumably, this will be about examinations in individual cases. However, we will not be able to fill any additional posts, because there are no budgetary funds available for this purpose, but can only extend existing contracts.

Secondly, there is the question of extending grants. There is no additional money available for this either. Extensions are therefore only possible within the budget. We will presumably orientate ourselves to the DFG guidelines in the case of a regulation for our university, which still needs to be discussed, and will therefore conduct individual case studies. The other universities in Thuringia are doing the same.

According to initial information, the study promotion agencies, which also award doctoral scholarships, have already reacted to the current situation and decided how to proceed with the extension of scholarships. The affected doctoral students are kindly requested to inform themselves on the respective homepages and, in case there are further problems, to contact the liaison lecturers of the individual funding institutions at our university. The DFG, for example, has now also developed corresponding guidelines.

Exams and examinations

In what form do examinations currently take place?

Against the background of the ongoing Corona pandemic, the University of Erfurt has decided to conduct examinations as online examinations in the winter semester 2020/21 as well.

This will be based on the Corona Mantel Act passed by the Thuringian state parliament and a statute based on it, which enables and regulates the implementation of modified examination formats. After a data protection follow-up assessment, the university acquired a license for the examination software WISEflow from the provider UniWise in the summer semester.

This means that both the legal and technical requirements for electronic examinations will be available from 13th July 2020. The focus will be on the electronically conducted distance exams, which will enable students to write their exams under supervision at home if they have a computer with webcam and a stable internet connection. However, both the submission of written papers via WISEflow and the conduct of oral distance examinations can be realized with WISEflow.

Please also see our website on online exams. There you will find continuous and further information.

Will examinations in the summer semester 2021 again offer the possibility of a free attempt?

Yes, this applies according to the Corona Statutes in pandemic semesters. The Presidium of the University of Erfurt has declared the summer semester 2021 to be a pandemic semester.

Will there be central rules on the scope, type, catch-up period etc. for the examinations that have to be catched up, or will each teacher regulate this himself?

The formal regulation of the examinations is the responsibility of the examination committees, the concrete implementation is the responsibility of the examiners. The Presidium can only appeal to the examiners in this matter, but cannot prescribe anything.

Organizational

I am a student and do not have a computer. Can I borrow one at the university?

The student council has Thinkpads for students to borrow. If you need one of them, please contact the students council directly via e-mail: stura.vorstand@uni-erfurt.de.

I have poor internet access in the country, is there a place at university where I can work?

The student services organisation ("Studierendenwerk Thüringen") offers to rent out some of its dormitories on short notice - for one or two months. The dormitories are equipped with WLAN throughout. Those interested can contact the student services organisation directly. Contact them at: www.stw-thueringen.de/deutsch/wohnen/index.html

The university also offers to open rooms on the campus for students on weekdays, who can then work there with their own laptops during the day while observing the applicable distance regulations and hygiene measures. The campus is fully equipped with WLAN. The use of the pool rooms in the KIZ and the computer workstations in the library is not possible for the time being, as the disinfection of computers and keyboards cannot be guaranteed without interruption.

Can I also apply for BAföG at short notice if I get into financial difficulties due to the Corona crisis?

Due to the current corona pandemic, the income situation has worsened considerably for many students and their parents - whether due to job loss or short-time work. The "Deutsches Studentenwerk" (DSW) has therefore informed that BAföG applications can be made at short notice to alleviate these financial difficulties: press release (only available in German)

In addition, students who have run into financial difficulties for a short period of time can apply for a bridging loan of up to 800 euros from the Student Services Organisation (Studierendenwerk). This applies especially for students who are not entitled to BAföG and for foreign students. The contact person for this is the General Social Counseling Service, which can be reached under e-mail: asb@stw-thueringen.de.

Students in Thuringia, who got into financial difficulties through no fault of their own due to the Corona crisis, can also apply for an interest-free social loan (supported by the universities) up to a maximum of 800 Euros at the Student Services Organisation (Studierendenwerk Thüringen). The state has agreed to take over half of this loan amount and thus convert the loans into Corona financial aid.

In 2021, students can also apply to the Thuringian Student Services Organisation for the one-off "StudiumThüringenPlus" start-up grant of 500 euros. The grant is given to new students from low-income families who are admitted for the first time to study at a Thuringian state or state-recognised university. The money from "StudiumThüringenPlus" can be used, for example, for PC hardware and software, study materials and study literature, language courses, the semester fee or other things needed to start studying or study-related expenses.

Further information on this can be found in the news on this page.

Due to Corona, my studies have exceeded the standard period of study. Do I have to submit an application to the university for the suspension of the long-term study fees or does this happen automatically?

With the Second Act on the Implementation of Necessary Measures in Connection with the Corona Pandemic (2nd ThürCorPanG), Article 6 § 6 Paragraph 1 of the Thuringia Act on Mitigating the Consequences of the Corona Pandemic in Higher Education (ThürCorHG), the standard period of study for students enrolled in the winter semester 2020/2021 and summer semester 2021 who are not on leave of absence is to be extended by one semester each. Long-term tuition fees will automatically not be charged once the law is passed, so no application needs to be made. This also applies to students who would have to pay the long-term tuition fees in a second degree programme. Provided the fees have already been paid to ensure proper re-registration for the summer semester 2021, the fees will be refunded.

Can the silent workplaces on campus also be used at the weekend?

On Saturdays and Sundays, the 53 marked workstations in the Audimax building, rooms 007 and 0012, as well as the cloakroom, are accessible via the guard at the main entrance to the campus. Should further places be required, those on the ground floor of building 1 can be made available on request.

Will there be any relief for students with care responsibilities during the Corona pandemic?

The University of Erfurt is committed to providing the best possible support for staff and students with care responsibilities (childcare, care of relatives) during the Corona pandemic. For example, by extending the deadlines for final papers and assignments due to the closed library, the affected students have the opportunity to make sensible individual arrangements with the lecturers for deadlines and examinations due to their special burdens. This also applies beyond the pandemic situation. In addition, the university has decided on the possibility of a so-called "free attempt" for electronic examinations as well as a more flexible and generous approach to examination formats. In addition, "corona semesters" will not be included in the calculation of the standard period of study.

With regard to emergency care for children in daycare centres, however, the university cannot influence the applicable general ordinance of the city, which excludes this possibility. Against this background, the same regulations for the possibility of extending the period of study will apply in the winter semester 2021 without negative consequences as in the summer semester 2020.
