Prof. Dr. Christopher Smith: Ehemaliger Fellow

Fellow am Max-Weber-Kolleg Nov. 2017 bis April 2018

Christopher Smith is Professor of Ancient History at the University of St Andrews. He was Director of the British School at Rome from 2009 to 2017. His work encompasses state formation, historiography and political philosophy in the first millennium BC with a specific focus on Rome. Among his publications are The Roman Clan: The Gens from Ancient Ideology to Modern Anthropology and a co-edited edition of The Fragments of the Roman Historians.

Research Project

He comes to the Max Weber Kolleg as holder of a Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship (2017 to 2020) and will be working on kingship at Rome. Starting from the problematic Roman narrative, he hopes to be able to use a combination of archaeological evidence and theoretical models to develop new approaches to the concept of power in antiquity.
