Dr. Daniele Miano

Zur Person

I am a Lecturer in Ancient History at the University of Sheffield, and my fellowship at the Max-Weber-Kolleg is generously funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. I have previously held a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the School of Classics, University College Dublin, and a Lectureship in Ancient History at Brasenose and St Anne's Colleges, University of Oxford. I studied in Rome, Manchester, Pisa and Paris, and I obtained my doctorate in Classics and Ancient History at the Scuola Normale Superiore at Pisa.

Forschungsprojekt

My research focuses on the connection between ancient polytheism and the creation and definition of political and social concepts, using historical semantics as a starting point. In the past I have worked extensively on deities sharing names with concepts, such as Fortuna, Victoria, Ops and Salus. Here in Erfurt I wish to push this direction of study one step further, analysing the connection between deities with traditional names and concepts, explored through the attribution of epithets. I shall use Campania from the archaic period to AD 200 as my geographical and historical focus. I am particularly interested in the translation of deities from one language to another in this context.
