Teaching support fund launched at the University of Erfurt: Innovative teaching projects wanted

For the first time, the University of Erfurt is launching a teaching support fund to support innovative teaching projects with up to 2,500 euros in order to specifically strengthen the quality of teaching.

The University of Erfurt's “Lehrförderfonds“ supports innovative teaching projects to further develop the quality of teaching and learning. This gives lecturers the opportunity to try out new didactic approaches, further develop existing formats and provide sustainable impetus in teaching.

Lecturers can apply for funding of up to 2,500 euros for their own projects for a period of up to 12 months. Funding can be provided for teaching assignments, material resources such as travel expenses and publication resources, student assistantships, but also qualification measures, etc.

Project outlines are submitted using an application form via the respective Deanery. Applications are possible until 15 June 2026. The start of the funding period can take place flexibly on 1 October 2026 or 1 April 2027.

The “Lehrförderfonds“ is part of the University's strategic teaching development programme. The decision on funding is made by an awards committee appointed by the Presidium; funded lecturers will be informed in August 2026. University Didactics supports lecturers in the further development of teaching concepts, the application process and the implementation of projects.

"The University of Erfurt's new teaching support fund provides targeted impetus for the further development of teaching: it opens up space to implement innovative ideas and further expand proven concepts. By supporting teaching staff in trialling new methods and continuously improving their courses, we are sustainably strengthening the quality of our teaching. At the same time, promoting innovative teaching concepts helps to raise the status of teaching as a whole and further promote the exchange of ideas about good teaching," says Professor Julia Knop, Vice President for Academic Affairs.

"Theologie der Gegenwart" journals now available open access

Theology needs public debate. Today, the digital space is particularly suitable for this. That is why the Faculty of Catholic Theology at the university is now taking a new approach: Its journals "Theologie der Gegenwart" (ThG) are now available free of charge in open access.

"We gave this a lot of thought in the editorial team and also discussed it intensively within the faculty," explains Professor Benedikt Kranemann, Editor-in-Chief of ThG. "If we want to reach a larger, younger and international audience, the switch to a digital format is the right step."

The journal has been published by the faculty since 2005. Four themed issues are published each year, alternating between the theological disciplines. In addition to the thematically focussed articles, further articles are published on various theological issues. A special concern of the journals is to support young theologians with their first publications. Articles on the history and current situation of the church and society in the East German federal states are also regularly included. In addition, the authors comment on numerous current theological and church-social topics.

The ThG is now available on the journals@UrMEL portal of the Thuringian University and State Library Jena (ThULB): https://zs.thulb.uni-jena.de/receive/jportal_jpjournal_00002815. All 20 volumes since 2005 are freely accessible in the archive. These are currently undergoing technical processing so that individual articles can be searched for and read in future.

The first issue to be published in full in open access was published in March. It was conceived by ethicist Professor Dr Katharina Klöcker. The thematic focus is on public Christian ethics.

The editorial team spent over a year preparing the switch to open access. The publisher Butzon & Bercker, which previously published the journal, has thankfully released the ThG without any complications, Benedikt Kranemann is pleased to report. In recent months, the editorial team has therefore been able to concentrate fully on the technical realisation of the project. He would also like to thank Martina Schlütter from the Electronic Text Center at Erfurt University Library and the journals@UrMEL portal team at Jena University Library, without whose expert advice the project could not have been realised.

"We will now spend a year gathering experience in open access," announces Benedikt Kranemann. "Then the editorial team and faculty will decide where we want to make changes and take new steps." The path to the future of ThG has thus been taken.

The University Library officially launches the new Erfurt University Bibliography (EFUB) on 20 January. The technically completely revised platform lists the publications of members and affiliates of the university online, offers simple options for reporting publications and visualises the publication achievements of the University of Erfurt with a variety of graphical analysis functions.

Open Access Publication Fund of the University of Erfurt also in the years 2026 to 2028 with funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG)

A proposal submitted to the German Research Foundation (DFG) under the leadership of the University Library for the second funding phase of the Open Access Publication Costs programme was successful. The University Library had already raised funds for the first funding phase of the 2023 to 2025 programme, with which it was able to strengthen the Open Access Publication Fund. This important financial component of open access funding has now also been secured for the years 2026 to 2028.

Securing the financial basis for open access funding is all the more important in view of the high demand at the University of Erfurt. In 2025, the acceptance of new funding applications to the fund had to be stopped prematurely in October, as the available funds had been exhausted by the full or partial funding of four books and 70 article publications. The DFG funding obtained can help to realise all planned open access publications at the university in the future. Everyone benefits from the greatly increased visibility of research results through open access.

Open Access publishing options expanded: University of Erfurt joins DEAL agreement with Elsevier

Of the open access transformation agreements concluded with the three major academic publishers Elsevier, Springer Nature and Wiley under the auspices of the German Rectors' Conference, the University of Erfurt has already participated in the agreements with Springer and Wiley since 2024. As a result of an evaluation of the first two years of the agreement and a new cost analysis by the University Library, the University will also join the agreement with the publisher Elsevier on 1 January 2026.

In addition to reading access to the more than 2,600 journals in the publisher's portfolio, the contract offers simplified options for publishing open access with Elsevier. The new cost model introduced with the DEAL contracts comes into play here, according to which the total costs for the University of Erfurt are also based solely on the number of publications per contract year.

The following points are important for publishing in Elsevier journals:

In those journals that do not work entirely according to the Open Access model (Hybrid Open Access), all publications with a corresponding author from the University of Erfurt are assigned to us on the basis of the affiliation and e-mail address provided upon submission. No further action is then required on the part of the publisher. The University Library bears the article costs via the participation fees. It is important to note that an obligation to pay costs remains in place even if publishers decline the Open Access option (opt-out).

A special pricing model applies to the Elsevier journals of the Cell Press and The Lancet brands. Here, the fees charged to us for articles in hybrid open access journals are very high at EUR 7,464 per publication.

For publications in journals that already work entirely according to the Open Access model (Fully Gold Open Access), a discount of 20 % on the publication fee is granted as part of the DEAL agreement. For the Fully Gold journals of Cell Press and The Lancet, the discount is reduced to 15 %.

The costs for the publication of articles in the Fully Gold journals are invoiced to the university in addition to the participation fees.

In order for publications to be correctly assigned to the new agreement, publishers must select the University of Erfurt as their institution as Corresponding Author during the submission process. All articles published Open Access are then subject to a legally compliant Creative Commons licence, which allows free reuse while maintaining the citation obligation. The CC-BY licence type should preferably be selected.

The Erfurt University Library is planning to launch the new Erfurt University Bibliography at the beginning of next year. Preparations are making great strides and the so-called "pre-tests" are now underway.

The new university bibliography was created as part of the state-wide "Thuringian University Bibliography" project and pursues the following common goals:

to relieve researchers as far as possible of time-consuming reporting procedures by using automated procedures for publication registration and verification;

to create options for retrieving and re-utilising individual publication lists from within the system;

minimise costs through cooperative development;

to create uniform standards for Thuringia;

to utilise interfaces to other systems used in Thuringia (e.g. research information systems) and

to make the open access status of publications visible.

A so-called "pretest" is now pending, for which the ERfurt University Library is asking for support and feedback: Five to ten people from the academic field (academic employees, researchers, publishers) as well as from the academic support area (secretariat, academic assistants) are being sought. A pre-test lasts a maximum of 15 minutes and is conducted online via Webex. The pretests are recorded so that the University Library can incorporate the feedback into further development in the best possible way. (If you do not wish to be recorded but would still like to take part in the pretest, you can let us know when you register). Following a presentation of the candidates open to the university public last Friday, the University Assembly voted in favour of her by a majority today. She had been put forward in advance as one of three candidates by a selection committee in which both members of the Senate and the University Council were represented.
As part of its efforts to promote equality and respect within the university, the University of Erfurt will be showing the exhibition "Together Against Sexism" in the University Library from 24 November 2025. It will then be on display until 17 January 2026 during the library's regular opening hours.

This exhibition, which is being shown in parallel at several universities in Thuringia, looks at various facets of sexism and aims to raise awareness of this important issue. The opening will take place on Tuesday, 25 November at 2 pm. Afterwards, the film "She Said" will be shown in the library's lecture room. 25 November is also the International Day against Violence against Women, to which the University of Erfurt has also drawn attention in recent years with various campaigns.

To mark the end of the exhibition, a public event is planned for 14 January with author Franziska Saxler, who will read from her book „Er hat dich noch nicht mal angefasst. Sexualisierte Belästigung und Machtmissbrauch im Job – und wie wir uns davor schützen können“. Afterwards, there will be an opportunity to discuss the topic. The event will begin at 4 p.m. in the lecture room of the university library.

Anyone interested is cordially invited to attend.
