Placement and Courses

Placement Test (DPT)

The DPT (Dynamic Placement Test) is the test currently used by the University of Erfurt to determine which English courses students are eligible for. Students who wish to attend an English course must take this test unless they have already passed a course at the University of Erfurt that qualifies them for the next higher course. This means that passing a course at B2.2 level qualifies participants for a course at C1.1 level.

Test dates are offered in the introductory week of the winter semester and in the first week of the summer semester.

The next placement tests will take place in the first week of the summer semester 2025 on Friday, 11 April at 12.30 pm in rooms 339 and 343 in teaching building 1 - C03. Registration will take place via Moodle from 24 March.

LKI Courses

English students are required to take two LKI courses to complete their O-Phase. We offer LKI courses with a module exam (MP) and without an exam (qT). You can take the following two combinations of LKI courses:

  • 2 LKI courses with an MP,
  • 1 LKI course with an MP and 1 LKI course with a qT.

A combination of 2 LKI courses with a qT is not possible, as otherwise an LKI module exam grade would be missing.

Level Exams

General Information

Students who apply for an exchange programme (e.g. Erasmus) via the International Office of the University of Erfurt and have to provide proof of language proficiency may take our B2 exam

The B2 exam for the University of Erfurt's exchange programme is only offered at the end of the winter semester.

If the partner university requires a C1 certificate and students have not received a place in a C1.2 course, they should register for an internationally recognised C1 examination (e.g. TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge).

B2 Exam

The examination consists of a written and an oral part. The written part tests the skills of listening, reading, writing and grammar, while the oral part comprises an approx. 30-minute interview. The examination is deemed to have been passed if the overall grade for the sub-areas is at least 4.0. A certificate can be issued on request.

Participation in an English course to prepare for the exam is recommended.
