The "World in Transition" lecture series starts the summer semester in April

The joint lecture series between the University of Erfurt, the Thuringian state parliament and the Funke Media Group will kick off the summer semester on Tuesday, 21 April under the title "Welt im Wandel" (World in Transition). The starts with one of the most pressing challenges of our time: the climate crisis and the role of the media in reporting on it. Our guest will be Sara Schurmann, a freelance journalist and co-founder of the Climate Journalism Network. Her lecture begins at 6.15 pm in lecture hall 2 of the Communication and Information Centre (KIZ) at the University of Erfurt.

Her lecture, “The Role of the Media in the Climate Crisis”, explores how journalists can make the complex topic of climate change understandable and tangible – and where the challenges and blind spots lie. The focus will initially be on a brief overview of the current state of the climate crisis. Schurmann will then turn her attention to media coverage: what responsibility do the media bear in the public debate on climate protection and adaptation? What structural problems hinder adequate coverage? And what solutions are emerging? Finally, Schurmann looks to the future: what role can journalism play in the democratic debate on climate policy? And where do the boundaries lie between constructive reporting, activism and greenwashing?

The programme continues on Wednesday, 28 May with a lecture by Barbara Schlomann from the Federal Government's Expert Council for Climate Issues. The final lecture will be given by Eckart von Hirschhausen on Monday, 6 July.

All interested parties are cordially invited to attend these lectures. Admission is free, but registration is requested at www.thueringer-allgemeine.de/ringvorlesung is requested.
