AEGEE - What, Why, How?

AEGEE is a Europe-wide student network focussing on international exchange.

And in order to achieve this, we organise various cultural, political and educational events. We can also access the events of the network (AEGEE Europe) and thus enable travelling and education on the entire European continent, as AEGEE has over a hundred antennas ranging from Azerbaijan to the Canary Islands.

Dear fellow students,
we are the university group ‘Awareness Network’. Our main aim is to ensure that interactions at the University of Erfurt are, and remain, considerate and respectful at all times.
We see ourselves as a coordinating body on the topic of awareness – that is, mindfulness regarding power dynamics, discrimination and individual boundaries. Within this framework, we support awareness-raising work, for example at events organised by your student councils (FSRs), university groups, the Student Council (StuRa) and other university stakeholders.
We’re also building a network of knowledge, resources and employees to create sustainable structures. In the future, we’d also like to offer awareness training ourselves to share our knowledge.

Since its foundation in 2011, BaseMent e.V. has been committed to educational equity and equal opportunities for children and young people. We offer a mentoring programme in which children and young people are paired with dedicated mentors. The aim is to use shared interests to build a strong and friendly bond between mentors and mentees, which extends to various areas of life. At BaseMent, the focus is on the children and young people, and great importance is attached to ensuring that mentors and mentees meet as equals within their mentoring pairs and learn from one another.

The HSG ‘Sprechende Hände’ is an open and inclusive meeting place for anyone interested in German Sign Language (DGS), Deaf culture and active inclusion. For us, it’s not just about learning and practising sign language, but above all about meeting others, exchanging ideas and fostering mutual understanding between hearing, hard-of-hearing and deaf people.
Our meetings focus on learning and using DGS together. At the same time, we aim to broaden our horizons regarding different dialects and other sign languages. We also explore the culture, history and everyday realities of the Deaf community.
Whether you’re completely new to this or already have some prior knowledge: everyone is welcome here! So you don’t need any experience in DGS – just an interest, an open mind and a desire to engage :)

The ‘queerfurt’ university group is a safe space for queer people. It was formed in response to a lack of queer spaces at the University of Erfurt. The group’s aim is to provide a safe environment for queer people and allies in Erfurt, where we can exchange ideas, meet up and receive further education. We welcome people of all sexual orientations and gender identities and campaign for greater visibility and acceptance in a cis-hetero-normative world. Unfortunately, the current political situation in Thuringia is also having a significant impact on Erfurt’s queer community. This makes it all the more important to create a safe space and foster social acceptance, and to stick together.

We organise weekly meet-ups where we, for example, hold games nights and pub nights, just have a chat, or plan larger events. We’re always open to ideas and activities and would love for you to pop along.

Our group provides a safe space for neurodivergent people (people on the autism spectrum, those with ADHD, people with dyscalculia, dyslexia, Tourette’s syndrome, etc.) as well as for family members, friends and anyone else who is interested. Through regular group meetings, we aim to facilitate discussion about the challenges of living in a neurotypical society and whilst studying. Anyone new is warmly invited to bring along a topic they’d like to discuss – with absolutely no pressure. Whether it’s personal experiences, organising your studies, strategies for coping with sensory overload or the feeling of ‘not fitting in’: everything has its place. 

A key aim of our group is to break down prejudices, stigmas and stereotypes towards neurodivergent people. To this end, we are involved in public outreach, take part in events and are available as points of contact for organisations and individuals. We’re also happy to support research projects in the field of neurodiversity – for both students and teaching staff. Although we can help fill an important gap in the Thuringia region, we do not replace professional diagnosis, therapy or medication. However, we can recommend suitable support services on request. Sexism, racism, homophobia, ableism and all other forms of discrimination have no place here. campus:echo is the student magazine of the University of Erfurt. The members of the editorial team research and write on topics relating to campus and student life, they photograph, illustrate or layout the magazine. Journalistic experience is an advantage for employees of campus:echo, but not a requirement - creativity, a flair for interesting topics and enjoyment of writing are more important.

The magazine sees itself as a critical, reflective and investigative voice on campus that gets to the heart of the news in an entertaining way. campus:echo is published twice a semester - writers, illustrators, layout artists and photographers from all disciplines are always welcome.

HSG-Gaming is a colourful group of students and other members who share their hobby of gaming, connect and, of course, play together. From Dungeons & Dragons to Magic the Gathering and Settlers of Catan to all kinds of video games, we are very broadly positioned in the topic of nerdy niche hobbies.

If you would like to find new contacts for your hobby, get to know the hobby or just want to play a few games together, you are welcome to drop by.

Everyone is welcome!

The university group "UNIversal" regularly organises and produces a student radio magazine of the same name on Radio F.R.E.I (non-commercial local radio station in Erfurt). The student editors report on current events on campus, higher education policy and cultural and social topics, among other things.

The editorial team is open to students from all disciplines who would like to "make radio" and are interested in realising student topics on the radio. The programmes are prepared together - the contributions are presented live in the studio. Previous knowledge is not essential - it is also possible to "learn by doing". The HSG UNIversal is supported by Radio F.R.E.I. in terms of content and practice. The Radio F.R.E.I. programme can be received via the FM frequency 96.2 or via live stream on our homepage.

We are the Amnesty International university group at the University of Erfurt and a working group of the Thuringia regional group of Amnesty International Germany. Our aim is to raise awareness of human rights violations and to advocate for the protection of people at risk.
Through information events, actions and campaigns, we stand up for justice – whether on the Day Against Violence Against Women, in response to political developments in Thuringia, or as part of international Amnesty campaigns.

Welcome to the International Security Policy (ISP) university group!

Are you interested in foreign and security policy? Would you like to discuss current crises, geopolitical challenges and global security with other students? Then you’ve come to the right place!

We are a dedicated group at the University of Erfurt that enriches the discourse on security policy on campus through exciting events. Whether you’d just like to dip your toes in or get actively involved – with us, you’ll have the chance to discuss the latest topics and contribute your own ideas!

We organise discussion evenings, specialist talks, panel discussions and interactive sessions. For example, we’ve already organised an event on the war in Sudan featuring speakers Dr Timm Sureau and Saskia Jaschek. Equally exciting was our film screening followed by a discussion on the EU’s external border with Felix Weiss, the former spokesperson for SEA-WATCH.

But that’s by no means all! In our project groups, you can delve deeper into a specific security policy topic – conducting research, discussing it and even organising your own events together with other members. You can join a project group at any time or set up a new one!

Our weekly members’ meeting – the ‘Weekly Security Policy Review’: We meet almost every Monday at 8 pm in LG1, room 0012. After a brief overview of current foreign policy developments, we share our views – sometimes through panel discussions, sometimes with a pub quiz, small workshops or other interactive formats. Just pop in – everyone is welcome!

As a member of the “Federal Association for Security Policy at Universities” (BSH), we’re part of a large network of university groups that offers exciting opportunities across Germany: academies, seminars, excursions and even the chance to publish your own articles.

We are an open and diverse amateur orchestra – a place where students, working professionals and music enthusiasts play together. Whether you’ve been playing in an orchestra for a long time or simply want to develop your musical skills: with us, you can take on new challenges, discover exciting pieces and perform on stage with a dedicated ensemble. We enjoy our rehearsals, learn from one another and push ourselves to new heights together. New members are always welcome! We rehearse on Tuesdays at 7.15 pm at the University of Applied Sciences’ Green Campus (Leipziger Straße 77). There’s usually one rehearsal weekend per term – sometimes in Erfurt, sometimes further afield.

In December 2012, students at the University of Erfurt founded the big band, which is always keen to welcome new members. We have a varied musical repertoire, ranging from jazz to rock and pop. A committed and regular attendance at rehearsals, regular practice and a knowledge of musical notation are required. 

It is also possible to join the Big Band as part of the Studium Fundamentale programme. This allows students to earn 6 credit points over a period of two semesters. The band is led by Uli Singer.

Fancy some challenging choral music? Then the University of Erfurt Chamber Choir is just the place for you.

We meet once a week – and occasionally for rehearsal weekends – to practise listening to one another and exploring the music in depth with our voices. Rehearsals are usually followed by a choir get-together, where we also chat about things far removed from Music.

You’re welcome to pop along to a rehearsal to get a feel for the Chamber Choir – you can already get to know some of our members on our Instagram profile. If you’d like to join us, you’ll take part in a short audition, during which we’ll assess whether your voice suits our ensemble. You can arrange a date for this at any time by contacting our artistic director, Michael Käppler.

The choir can also be taken as part of the ‘Studium Fundamentale’ programme in the area of aesthetic perception.

Rehearsals

Since the summer of 2022, it has once again been possible to listen to the Erfurt University Choir – and, of course, to sing along! Whether it’s pop songs, jazz standards or epic film scores, the University Choir has a varied programme.
At present, it consists of around 60 singers from the University, the University of Applied Sciences and the wider community. Anyone can join in. Choral experience is welcome, but not essential.

Rehearsals take place every Monday during the lecture period from 6 pm to 9 pm sharp
in Lecture Hall 6 of Teaching Building 2.

The case of a professor at the University of Erfurt, who repeatedly abused his position to commit sexual assaults against female students, has once again brought home to us what we have long known: sexism and patriarchal power structures are at work on our campus too.

We want to take action against this untenable yet widely accepted ‘norm’ – by speaking out against sexualised assaults, supporting those affected and demanding consequences.

Have you been affected by sexual violence, sexism, harassment or discriminatory behaviour at the University of Erfurt? You are not alone! Are you looking for a listening ear and support? We will try to support you in line with your needs – which means, above all, that you decide what happens, when and how.

CAMPUSGRÜN is the green university group at the University of Erfurt. It is a member of the Federal Association of Green-Alternative University Groups – Campusgrün, whose stated aim is the “realisation of a society in which social justice prevails, human rights are genuinely upheld, nobody is discriminated against, and there is a balance between people and nature”.

The university group aims to promote green initiatives at the university and invites anyone interested to contribute their own ideas, wishes and suggestions to make the campus greener!

Trade unions are organisations made up of workers, students, apprentices and anyone who wishes to support the fight for better working conditions and fair wages. As the youth organisation of the German Trade Union Confederation – that is, as DGB Youth – we are particularly interested in the living and working conditions of students and apprentices, and we want to campaign in schools and the workplace (but also beyond) for a fairer society free from oppression, exclusion and discrimination. We provide information on these topics and are here to advise you on any questions or problems you may have. We also organise engaging events on a wide range of political issues, both past and present.

HSG Erfurt Unsilenced is made up of activists who have set themselves the aim of promoting political discourse on campus, as well as academic and educational debate on the region of West Asia, particularly Palestine.

We create a critical counter-public sphere by organising public events on campus, including panel discussions, lectures, workshops and film screenings,
as well as organising other educational and informational events and
taking part in relevant events off-campus.

In particular, we aim to represent the voices of the more than 500 international students on our campus and to amplify marginalised voices.

We stand up for the freedom of all oppressed peoples and are firmly committed to anti-racism, feminism and anti-capitalism. We condemn anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and all forms of hatred towards religious and ethnic minorities. At the same time, we will not allow the oppression and suffering of Jewish people around the world to be exploited to justify the mass killing of innocent civilians.

Queer-feminist, anti-fascist, anti-macho.

We are a self-organised group dedicated to raising awareness of and addressing queer-feminist issues. This applies both to Erfurt and beyond. Discriminatory experiences in everyday life must be called out, and patriarchal and queer-hostile structures must be dismantled – because that’s the only way we’ll achieve a good life for everyone! For us, our anti-fascist core consensus also means engaging politically and in civil society alongside other left-wing groups in Erfurt and Thuringia, in a spirit of solidarity.

All genders are welcome in our group. We strive to be as self-reflective as possible regarding our own privileges and to work in a way that minimises hierarchy. Based on this commitment, it is also clear to us that there is no place for ‘macker’ in the group. By ‘macker’, we mean men who deal with their own masculinity without self-reflection (who act like idiots in public). Furthermore, we strive to distribute our work sensitively according to our capacities and any potential multiple burdens, and to treat one another with respect.

We understand our feminism to be intersectional. We therefore do not tolerate racist, anti-Semitic, transphobic, queerphobic or any other forms of discriminatory statements at our internal or public events.

The Juso university groups are the student association of the Jusos (Young Socialists). As one of the largest student associations in Germany, we champion anti-fascism, feminism and internationalism, and promote these core values at universities and higher education institutions throughout Germany. We stand for social justice and affordable housing, and oppose tuition fees and right-wing structures on campus. We, the Juso-HSG Erfurt, meet every two weeks to discuss current political issues or plan events such as panel discussions. It’s important to note that you don’t need any prior knowledge to get involved with us, and you don’t even have to be a member of the Juso yourself. Of course, identifying with our core values would be an advantage, although you’re also welcome to pop in and see us if you’re simply curious about what exactly we do. The university group ‘Kritisches Lehramt’ focuses on issues relating to the teaching profession and works together to explore ways of raising awareness of socially important issues. The group is open to everyone and draws on a range of perspectives that extend beyond teacher training – because education concerns us all! 

There is still a lack of discussion regarding power imbalances and structural discrimination, which are perpetuated within the school system. It is unacceptable that it should continue to be the responsibility of individual committed students to address racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism and other issues, or to consider how these are manifested in everyday school life and in the classroom. A critical examination of teaching within the university plays just as important a role in this as an examination of school-based teaching. In the meantime, as the ‘Kritisches Lehramt Erfurt’ university group, we aim to bring together students from various disciplines and create a platform for exchange and further learning opportunities. The Ring of Christian-Democratic Students (RCDS) is the largest and longest-established political and academic university group in Germany. Since 1951, we have been campaigning for a liberal higher education policy, academic excellence and strong student participation in decision-making.

The Erfurt Students’ Union is a self-organised student support group that works to foster a sense of solidarity within the campus community.

SOS Humanity is a civilian maritime rescue organisation dedicated to rescuing people in distress in the Mediterranean and protecting their rights. Its guiding principle is: No one should drown whilst fleeing.

The SOS Humanity university group was founded to bring together students who are committed to human rights, solidarity and a humane refugee policy. In light of the humanitarian crisis at Europe’s external borders, we aim to actively support the work of SOS Humanity and draw attention to the plight of those seeking protection. Through organised information events, discussions and creative campaigns, we raise awareness of the reality in the Mediterranean, collect donations and promote political engagement in the cause of humanity and responsibility.

We are a group of people who engage critically with socio-political issues.

Our focus is on taking the time to engage in political debate: time to think through issues together and in depth; time to understand one another; and time to identify areas of consensus and disagreement.

We want to offer an alternative to the pervasive culture of action and the pressure to perform and compete in society and at university – not to exploit or ‘work through’ everything immediately, but to try to truly understand social contexts.

To this end, we meet to read and/or discuss texts together. What matters here is not prior knowledge or standing out, but shared understanding in an open, non-competitive atmosphere. We engage with one another as equals. You don’t need any prior knowledge at all!

To get started, we’ll be exploring psychoanalytical perspectives and the interplay between the individual and society. Further topics and areas of focus will emerge from our collaborative work and can be shaped together.

We are closely aligned with the Falken, as the founding members are all Falken members. However, we operate independently!

The ESG is open to all students in Erfurt. During the semester, there is a themed evening once a week, featuring dinner, a prayer service and a talk on an academic, social or religious topic. It is a place to spend free time together, meet up and make plans. At the ESG, students and young adults find support during stressful times, as well as the chance to socialise and find people to talk to. In addition, the university chaplain is available to all students for pastoral care.

The group is headed by a team of student volunteers and the ESG chaplain.

Our aim is to live out a vibrant faith in our everyday student lives. That’s why we actively engage with issues of faith and the challenges we face in daily life. The W.K.St.V. Unitas Ostfalia in Erfurt sees itself as an academic Catholic students’ association within Germany’s oldest Catholic students’ and academics’ federation – Unitas – which does not wear colours and does not practise duelling.

As a university group, it states that it offers students so-called ‘academic sessions’ – approximately five events per semester, with presentations given by students, employees, PhD students or professors (male or female) upon request. These are followed by an opportunity for discussion.

Depending on the semester’s theme and programme, cultural and leisure activities may also be organised. Barbecues are, of course, part of the programme. In addition, the group invites interested parties and friends of the association to the three major association festivals in honour of the association’s patron saints: Thomas Aquinas, Boniface and Mary Immaculata.

At the Bischof-Hugo-Aufderbeck-Haus, supported by a housing association, Ostfalia not only provides the society’s premises but also lets affordable student flats to students from all faculties.

In its guiding principles, the group is aimed at Christian students – based on the conviction “that Christian faith can be realised through lifelong fellowship”. The society’s principles are also derived from this:

• virtus – faith in action;
• scientia – academic education;
• amicitia – friendship.

We love films, and we want to bring the wondrous magic of the cinema straight into the lecture hall. Whether it’s blockbusters or arthouse films – every genre finds a loving home with us. Every term, we aim to create a colourful programme that will set the hearts of all film fans racing. During the lecture period, we screen a film every week, accompanied by freshly made popcorn, exciting collaborations and thrilling events!

The Sustainability Working Group is a group of committed students who are passionate about fostering an environmentally conscious community and working together to develop and implement sustainable projects. For more than 20 years, the working group has been an established player at the University and University of Applied Sciences, as well as within the city. It organises numerous initiatives, such as annual clothes and plant swap meets, vegan events and a sustainable city tour showcasing fair-trade and eco-friendly spots in Erfurt. It also organises food sharing at the university via a ‘Fairteiler’ (food-sharing cabinet), which is located on the ground floor of the Audimax building and is stocked with rescued food. To turn further ideas into reality, the Sustainability Working Group is always keen to receive feedback from interested visitors to its events, as well as from anyone who would like to get actively involved and contribute their ideas to the group.
