Courses and examinations

The French placement test for the winter semester 26/27 will take place exclusively online on your own laptop or PC from home. No registration is required. Who needs to take the test? Students who are interested in French courses and have some prior knowledge. Exceptions are students who have already successfully completed at least one French course at the University of Erfurt and wish to take the next higher-level course. When? 6 October, 8.00 am to 8 October, 10.00 am (Please note: the latest time to start the test is 9.30 am) Where and how?

• The Moodle room will be available from 1 October 26 . There you will find all the information about the test procedure and structure and can practise using the exercises provided.
• The actual test can only be taken during the specified period and will only be displayed then.

Alternative date: 16 October, 7.00 am to 2.00 pm.

This course is intended for students who have no or very little prior knowledge of French and prepares them for level A1.

0–15 marks in the placement test for students from all faculties; 0–5 for students of Romance languages

This one-semester course prepares students for the A2 certificate examinations. It is aimed at students who have taken the placement test at the start of the winter semester or who have passed the A1 examinations.

16–34 marks in the placement test for students with no background in Romance Studies, 5–34 marks for students with a background in Romance Studies

Politics, Culture and Society B1

The aim of the course is to learn about and discuss French values, symbols and socio-cultural aspects. How can they be explained? How have they developed over time?

Given the selected course materials, language skills at B1 level are required to follow this course.

Language courses B1

The B1.1 and B1.2 language courses prepare students over two semesters for the various components of the B1 examination.

Language Course B1.1

This course is aimed at students who, at the start of the winter semester, have taken the placement test (35–53 points) or have passed the A2 examination.

Language Course B1.2

This course is aimed at students who have successfully completed the B1.1 language course. In exceptional cases, and following consultation with the teaching staff, it is possible to enrol on the B1.2 course without having previously attended the B1.1 course.

Both courses cover topics and socio-cultural content relevant to the modern world, thereby promoting cultural exchange.

In addition, a variety of activities help to improve students’ language skills.

Grammar and Written Expression B2

The aim of the course is to improve students’ written expression by enabling them to analyse complex texts at both the semantic and syntactic levels and subsequently compose their own. Vocabulary and grammar exercises serve as the linguistic foundation for written expression.

This course therefore helps to develop the linguistic, cultural and academic competences required at B2 level.

Language and Culture B2

The B2.1 and B2.2 language courses prepare students over two semesters for the various components of the B2 examination.

This course is aimed at students who have taken the placement test at the start of the winter semester (54–64 points) or who have passed the B1 examination.

Literature: Reader 

Politics, Culture and Society B2/C1 

The aim of the course is to explore and discuss the values, symbolic representations and socio-cultural aspects of France and the French people. How can these be explained? How have they evolved over time? 

Presentations prepared by the students provide an opportunity to explore certain aspects covered in the course in greater depth. Given the selected course materials, language skills at B2 level are required to follow this course.

Translation B2/C1

This course is aimed at students in the fourth semester of the bachelor's programme in Romance Studies, as well as at students who have already passed the examination certifying their proficiency in French at B2 level. The translation exercises are primarily based on excerpts from 20th-century German-language literature. 

Language courses C1

The C1.1 and C1.2 language courses prepare students over two semesters for the various components of the C1 examination.

Language Course C1.1 (3 credits)

This course is aimed at students who have passed the placement test (76–100 marks) at the start of the winter semester or who have completed the B2 examination. It must be combined with another C1-level course (3 credits) in order to sit the C1.1 module examination.

Language Course C1.2 (3 credits)

This course is aimed at students who have successfully completed the C1.1 language course. It must be combined with another C1-level course (3LP) in order to sit the C1.2 module examination.
