Journalist in Residence-Fellowship-Program

The Institute for Planetary Health Behaviour (IPB) at the University of Erfurt is opening its doors to dedicated science journalists! Our new fellowship program for journalists offers the opportunity to become a journalist in residence, joining our interdisciplinary team and working alongside researchers on the intersection of climate and health.

What can you expect as a journalist in residence?

  • Diverse topics: The IPB studies human behaviour relevant to climate and health protection, climate adaptation, climate communication, societal polarisation, artificial intelligence, health promotion, and much more. Journalists are welcome to pursue their own research interests – whether in climate, health, or the interface between the two.
  • Experience research first-hand: You will gain direct insight into empirical behavioural science with practical relevance, and have the opportunity to deepen your own projects or investigations.
  • Sharing knowledge: We welcome your journalistic expertise, critical perspective, and your support in coaching early-career researchers in clear writing, pitching, and networking.

Framework conditions

  • Duration: The fellowship is designed to last approximately 2 to 4 months, ideally including two weeks on site at the Institute for Planetary Health Behaviour in Erfurt. The exact arrangements will be developed flexibly with you and tailored to your own project. To make the most of your stay and prepare publications, it is helpful to apply with a concrete project idea. Partially funded projects that can be implemented with us are also suitable.
  • Funding: We will support your project with a low to mid four-figure sum (EUR). This does not correspond to a full-time scholarship for 2-4 months. The amount is intended to cover your costs arising from the two-week intensive collaboration on site in Erfurt (travel, accommodation, etc.) and to enable you to concentrate fully on your project during these two weeks. We assume that you will also pursue other projects independent of us during the remaining project period.
  • Start: The earliest possible start is autumn 2025.
  • Freedom: There are minimal reporting requirements, no obligation to publish, and no requirement to complete the project during the stay.

Are you interested?

We are currently in a pilot phase and are especially keen to engage in direct dialogue with you. Bring your ideas and curiosity – we offer space for exchange, inspiration, and networking.

The fellowships have been awarded until mid-2026. Therefore, we are currently not accepting new applications. Please feel free to contact us for further information or a personal meeting by sending an email to  Dr. Mirjam Jenny.

This fellowship programme is part of our commitment to building bridges between science, media, and society, and exploring new paths in science communication.
