Obituary for Winfried Kumpitsch

It is with great sadness that we bid farewell to our friend and colleague Winfried Kumpitsch, who passed away unexpectedly on 5 June 2025.

From 2018 to 2021, Winfried Kumpitsch was a doctoral researcher at the International Graduate School ‘Resonant Self-World Relations in Socio-Religious Practices’, which is jointly supported by the Max-Weber-Kolleg of the University of Erfurt and the University of Graz. In the 2019/20 academic year, he worked at the Max-Weber-Kolleg as part of his cotutelle doctoral programme. He wrote his doctoral thesis on "The influence of Christian soldier saints on the emergence of a Christian soldier ideal", published in 2024 as "Adiuta! - Deus! Die Christianisierung des römischen Heereskultes im 4.-6. Jahrhundert" in the series Pharos Studien zur griechisch-römischen Antike.

Following his doctorate, Winfried Kumpitsch worked as a research assistant at the Institute of Antiquity at the University of Graz. We remember a cheerful, enthusiastic and sincere colleague and our thoughts are with his family.
