Religious Fundamentalism and Urbanity in Late Ancient Rome and Alexandria

Lecture in the scope of the series "Religion and Urbanity across space and Time"

only on webex

The collegiate research group "Religion and Urbanity" at the University of Erfurt invites you to a lecture series in the winter semester 2020/21 under the title "Religion and Urbanity in Time and Space".

Religion and urbanity are world-wide pervasive and long-established strategies of handling and fostering human sociality. In a world where over half of the population lives in cities and religion is far from disappearing or being relegated to the private, the question as to how they have interlocked historically is a critical issue that still needs further and more fine-grained exploration. Planned as a well-assorted and consistent course of 15 lectures, the lecture series presents such connections by zooming in on specific examples of Mediterranean, North-European, North-American, and Asian cities from the rise of urbanism to the present time.

The lectures take place on Tuesdays from 6 to 8 pm on the campus of the University of Erfurt, in lecture hall 2 (KIZ). As the number of visitors is limited due to Corona, it will also be possible to attend the events online.

Tuesday, 09 February, 6 pm, Prof. Dr. Richard Lim (Universität Erfurt, Max-Weber-Kolleg) will hold the lecture “Religious Fundamentalism and Urbanity in Late Ancient Rome and Alexandria” in the scope of the series “Religion and Urbanity across space and Time”.

The rise of Christianity and the transformation of the Classical world entailed interactions that ranged from appropriation, assimilation, to acts of violence and destruction. This lecture examines key developments in two metropolitan cities, Rome and Alexandria-by-Egypt. It aims to show how intra-Christian violence in Rome and clashes between Christians and pagans in Alexandria - the latter exemplified by the destruction of the Serapeum in 391 and the lynching of the philosopher Hypatia in 415 - can be understood in light of the mutual formation of religions and urbanity.
