Marguerite Porete and Meister Eckhart are among the most prominent spiritual voices of the 13th and 14th centuries, both of whom were persecuted by the Inquisition. Marguerite, who wrote a textbook whilst serving as a “clergesse”, was burned at the stake; Meister Eckhart was accused of heresy and his works were placed on the Index. They share more in common than has previously been recognised: a theology of the oneness of God and humanity; a doctrine of self-renunciation in the radical poverty of knowledge, will and possession; the union of love and inner freedom; and the transcending of narrow institutional boundaries in favour of a new way of being human. 

For the first time, this book systematically brings together key texts by both figures, contextualises their intellectual journeys and explores their lines of thought in their own words. It highlights and interprets parallels, revealing a shared intellectual constellation whose explosive power not only shook medieval Christianity – but continues to have an impact to this day.
