Short biography

Daria Pezzoli-Olgiati studied Theology and the Study of Religion at the universities of Fribourg and Zurich. In 1996 she completed her doctoral degree with a dissertation on the Apocalypse of John and in 2002 her Habilitation in the Study of Religion at the University of Zurich. 2004–2010 she was appointed as a SNFS Professor for the Study of Religion at the University of Zurich, 2010-2016 as the director of the Centre for Religion, Economy and Politics (ZRWP), an interdisciplinary project of the universities of Basel, Fribourg, Lausanne, Lucerne, Zurich, und the Collegium Helveticum (ETHZ). Since 2016 she has held the chair for the Study and the History of Religion at the Faculty for Protestant Theology at LMU Munich.

Her research interests focus on media and religion with particular attention for visual communication and audio-visual media and their interaction with religion. Furthermore, she works on theories of place and space as well as gender in relation to religion in the past and present. These theoretical reflections are developed through case studies in the history of religion in Europe and the contemporary society.

Research Project

Utopia as a Challenging Imagination of the City Religion and Urbanity in The Handmaid’s Tale

Utopian ideas and imaginations recur in politics, fiction, and popular culture. Literature and film elaborate visions of utopian and/or dystopian societies that mirror, criticise, or magnify aspects of the contemporary world. Positive and negative forms of utopia can be interpreted as a productive work of fiction which develops a political and spatial reflection on human forms of coexistence. Utopia is an ambivalent experiment in which reality and imagination are merged in complicated and challenging, mutual relationships.

Strikingly, utopian narratives tend to focus on urban places. As a fictional imagination of human coexistence, utopian cities represent blueprints of culture. In the planned project, utopia and the city are analysed as interdependent phenomena that over centuries have adapted to different media and forms. The project focuses on the interweaving of utopia, religion and the city in the narrative universe initiated in 1985 by the Canadian author Margaret Atwood with the novel “The Handmaid’s Tale”, which has developed into a cultural phenomenon since then.
