General Information

Types of Courses and Seminars

In the subject area of English, three types of course/seminar are offered to students of the University of Erfurt – those directly related to the subjects of BA-English Studies (see: B Anglistik) as well as those which form a part of the professional skills component of studies (StuFu-/Berufsfeld-Module).

  • Type A: module oriented courses and seminars which
count towards the language practice foundation module (O AA03) and
the more specialised language and culture (Q AA08BF, Q AA23BF) or
advanced language practice (M06, M10, QAA08BF, QAA23BF) modules of the English Studies degree,
e.g., General Language Practice, Grammar in Context, Translation, Essay Writing, Aural/Oral Practice, Introductory Course (English Speaking Countries; USA; Great Britain), Writing Skills.
  • Type B: module oriented courses
which count towards the foreign language requirement of the professional skills component (Berufsfeld),
i.e., English courses which can be attended by students of degree courses other than English Studies in order to refresh or perfect existing English skills,
e.g., General Language Practice, Academic Reading, Reading Non-Fiction, Au/Or Practice, Academic Writing.
  • Type C: English courses specifically geared towards fulfilment of the foreign language requirement which
are mainly attended by students of degree courses other than English Studies, e.g., Business English, IELTS, Writing Skills, Speaking and Fluency.

In the courses of type *A* and *B*, credit points can be acquired for English Studies (B, MEd, Berufsfeldmodule) or for the foreign language requirement of the professional skills component (see: Studium fundamentale).

Credit points from *C* type courses only count towards the professional skills component and are not accepted as a part of B-English Studies.

Course organisation and assignment

Course organisation and assignment

The assignment of courses or English Studies seminars to the respective modules of the O-/Q-phases is carried out in accordance with the general examination regulations, the regulations for English Studies
and the regulations for languages at the University of Erfurt (see: Sprachenordnung).

Course organisation, the allocation of credit points and test/examination requirements are in accordance with the regulations for English Studies and for languages. Furthermore, the English courses taught prepare students for the language proficiency exams  (see:  Language Proficiency Exams/Niveaustufenprüfungen) which are offered by the language centre at the end of the winter (B2&C1) and summer semesters (C1).

The Oxford Placement Test (see: OPT) serves as an entry option for students of English Studies to courses of the foundation language modules for language practice, the cultural studies related module as well as the language practice oriented modules of the Q-phase.

Students not studying for an English degree who want to take part in English courses, for example, in order to prepare themselves for their studies abroad or to fulfil the requirements of their study programmes (see: Sprachanforderungen) also have to sit the OPT.

The points score in the OPT acts as a guide for teachers/course instructors in judging the language ability of students wishing to attend language courses (see: chart below)

Participation of English courses should be confirmed by the end of the second week of the semester using the E.L.V.I.S grades administration system. This is to ensure that course credits acquired through course work, tests or exams will be officially recognised during the respective semester. Students will be given detailed information about the single course requirements by their teachers during the first two weeks of the semester.

Self-Study Centre

The self-study centre is a useful resource for students wishing to use learning software, watch English language films or read English literature. It is also possible to borrow some of the reading material. If you have any special questions, please contact the study assistants in the centre, (see: SLZ)
