Policy Ultra Brief Series

Policy Ultra Briefs: Behavioural Science for Public Policy

Political decision-makers often face complex challenges under considerable time pressure and must make decisions under conditions of uncertainty. At the same time, the demand for robust, evidence-based responses to pressing societal issues continues to grow.

The Policy Ultra Briefs address this need by providing concise, scientifically grounded briefs that translate the latest findings from psychology and related behavioural sciences into clear and actionable policy recommendations.

An initiative of the German Psychological Society (DGPs), the Policy Ultra Briefs are authored by experts from academia and practice, undergo peer review, and are specifically designed to meet the needs of policymakers.

Each series focuses on a key societal challenge. The first series addressed climate change mitigation. The Institute for Planetary Health Behaviour serves as co-editor of this series, and additional topics are planned.

Policy Ultra Briefs on climate protection

Climate change mitigation is one of the defining challenges of our time – politically, socially, and psychologically. This first series of Policy Ultra Briefs brings together behavioural science insights on key questions in climate policy, ranging from overarching issues (such as the actual and perceived public acceptance of climate policy measures) to specific policy instruments (including carbon pricing), selected areas of action (such as wind energy and food systems), and topics including solution-oriented knowledge, climate emotions, and climate communication.

A total of twelve articles have been published as part of this series. They provide concise scientific analyses and practical policy recommendations that are evidence-based, accessible, and relevant to decision-makers. We invite readers to explore the briefs, share them widely, and bring their insights into policy discussions.

Policy Ultra Briefs on the topic of early warning systems

A new Policy Ultra Brief series on early warning systems for extreme weather events and other climate-related risks is currently being developed. Co-editors from the Institute for Planetary Health Behaviour (IPB) invite proposals for contributions drawing on behavioural science. The series is scheduled for publication in autumn 2026.
