Cathedral Cities in Context. Bishops’ Seats in Medieval East Central Europe as Urban and Religious Centres
This project investigates the cathedral cities in the kingdoms of Bohemia, Hungary and Poland in a comparative perspective in the period between c.1000 and c.1400 CE. Using the conceptual framework of heterarchy, it explores the relationship between ecclesiastic and secular power, and its reflection in the site selection and the topography of built structures and spaces belonging to either side. It will consider changes over time and follow up how a third power, the communities of the inhabitants gradually emerged.
