Political Value-Attachments and the Justification of a Philosophical Value-Theory

The aim of this project is to show how a philosophy of value might offer a systematic framework to articulate the tendencies of polarization we witness in various current social and political conflicts and debates. Whereas rationalist views have difficulties to understand the obstacles of achieving compromises, theories of political affects and emotions tend to locate different standpoints in rather simple mental states and attitudes. Referring to value-attachments, however, allows us to stress the more fundamental layer of such conflicts. Starting with the insight that value-attachments may be described either as attachments to specific articulations of abstract values like solidarity, or as attachments to the values of concrete valuable entities (for instance a monument or a national park), it is argued that such attachments offer an important foundation of both individual and collective orientations in life. In our social world, they go along with personal and collective engagement and the intention to “open the eyes” of other people for the objects of one’s own engagement. Understanding their importance could make it easier to identify crucial questions and actual conditions of compromises, as well as beliefs that are too fundamental to be object of terms and trade-offs.
