Female Researchers at the Perthes Collection

As part of the "Thuringian Program for the Promotion of Early-Career Female Researchers and Artists," the University of Erfurt is offering three short-term fellowships for female PhD holders in 2025. The fellowships support research on the collections of the Gotha Research Library, with a maximum duration of five months

The fellowship can start as early as August 1, 2025, and must be completed no later than December 31, 2025. Depending on the thematic focus, the fellows will be affiliated either with the Gotha Research Centre or the Centre for Transcultural Studies, both of which are part of the University of Erfurt.

Profile

The short-term fellowship is intended for exceptional female PhD holders who plan to start a new project, continue, or complete an ongoing research project. Please note that proof of successful completion of the doctoral exams is required at the start of the fellowship. The fellowship supports research projects that engage scientifically with the holdings of the Gotha Research Library and the historical collections of the Justus Perthes Gotha Publishing House. The program is open to a wide range of topics and disciplines. Additionally, materials from the Thuringian State Archives – Gotha State Archive and the Friedenstein Foundation Gotha may be consulted as part of the project. The Centre for Transcultural Studies directs its research activities toward the holdings of the Perthes Collection. The Perthes Collection is one of the most important cartographic-geographical archives in continental Europe and holds the records of the publishing house Justus Perthes Gotha and both of its successors. The unique feature of the collection is the extensive collection of correspondence, work journals, manuscripts, map drafts, and a large number of printed maps from other publishers. The materials allows deep insights into the interior of three extraordinary and influential European cartographic publishing houses, as well as into the development of various earth sciences: Accessing the holdings

Funding:

  • Monthly stipend of € 2,000

  • Family allowance of € 300 for one child and € 150 for each additional child (if applicable)
