The Dutch theologian and canon lawyer Myriam Wijlens has met and worked with the new Pope Leo XIV several times in recent years. From Australia, where she is on a business trip, she reacts to the election of the American Robert Francis Prevost.

"I was already in bed when I received a notification about the white smoke," says Professor Myriam Wijlens, who comes from Twente (Netherlands) and teaches in Erfurt. She had arrived in Australia the day before and was trying to recover from jet lag. "It was two o'clock in the morning here, but of course I didn't want to sleep."
