The graduate centre Glocal Religiosities (GlocRel) offers outstanding early career researchers the opportunity to complete a doctorate within a structured programme. It is based on interdisciplinary religion-related research at the Faculty of Philosophy and the Faculty of Catholic Theology.
At the centre of our work is an interest in how global and local traditions, religious practices and experiences are intertwined. The researchers at the graduate centre explore how social identities and affiliations are formed through these interdependencies and how they are lived individually and collectively. They examine how local and global narratives are told and staged performatively in various media - and how these processes are shaped by the complex influences and dependencies of globalisation.
Doing a doctorate at the graduate centre
The doctorate is more than just an individual path - it is a joint process that we actively organise at the doctoral college. Regular events, project presentations and personal counselling sessions provide structure and orientation. Our doctoral students are part of a lively, transdisciplinary network of religion-related research that is characterised by thematic proximity and great diversity.
Intensive dialogue is particularly important. Ideas grow, theses are sharpened and new perspectives are discovered through dialogue. Our events offer space to try things out, to reflect together and for mutual inspiration. The cultural variety and diversity of the members are just as enriching as the broad spectrum of expertise contributed by academics from two faculties.
The graduate centre offers the infrastructure and the academic environment in which doctoral candidates acquire skills that are essential for their future work as academics:
- the ability to speak in a national and international context on their own topic as well as on a broad spectrum of current topics in religion-related research
- Experience with academic publications and conferences
- The ability to communicate in academic teaching
- Ability to co-operate academically and work in a team
- Ability to communicate with the public
