The Gotha court theatre before Ekhof: an attempt to characterise it, with particular reference to the French-language repertoire
The Ekhof Theatre in Friedenstein Castle owes its name to Conrad Ekhof, under whose artistic direction the Gotha court theatre was institutionalised as a standing stage in 1775. However, the theatre was built much earlier. Its use before 1775 is extremely varied. The research project focuses on the aristocratic amateur theatre, which, under the direction of Franziska Juliane von Buchwald, performed mainly French plays from the mid-1730s onwards, often on festive occasions and with the participation of members of the ducal family. The intellectual profile reflected in the repertoire is analysed, as are its functions for court culture. #
