Media history of participation

The project “Seriality and Collections: Anthologies as Temporal Media Formats, 1700–1900” examines the double meaning of “florilegium” from a cultural and media-historical perspective: the acts of “picking and selecting” in the sense of anthological compilation and collection of literary texts, and the “reading” of these collections, insofar as anthologies, through their mediality and materiality, suggest specific forms of reception. The project focuses on exploring the relationship between anthological practices, media formats, and contemporary knowledge from the seventeenth century onward. Using the heuristic concept of anthologisation, it investigates how the desire to collect, disseminate, popularise, systematise, and canonise poetry gives rise to particular media formats. The temporal and praxeological dimensions of literary collecting become especially apparent at the intersection between anthological and periodical media forms. The project is therefore guided by the central hypothesis that anthologies, as cultural texts, develop distinct medial temporal logics and offer insights into specific forms of temporally coded media use.
