Recht(s)gläubig? Christentum, Populismus und Politische Theologien

Trump as the Anointed One of Christ, bringing about Armageddon in Iran? Not merely in the context of the war in Iran – and certainly not limited to the US alone – but also in Germany and Europe, religious-Christian motifs are increasingly being invoked to legitimise right-wing policies. The conference ‘Right-wing Faith? Christianity, Populism and Political Theologies’, taking place on 5–6 November 2026 in Erfurt, will examine the theological underpinnings of such strategies from various perspectives, highlight particular risks to theological concepts and point to prospects for hope.

To kick off the event on 5 November at 7.30 pm, Annika Brockschmidt and Henning Flad will discuss current developments and mechanisms of right-wing populist reception of religious-Christian motifs from German and American perspectives as part of the public evening lecture ‘Right-wing Faith? Christian-populist radicalisation in Germany and the US”, discussing current developments and mechanisms in the right-wing populist appropriation of religious-Christian motifs from German and American perspectives. On 6 November, from 9 am to 7 pm, the conference will then take a closer look at certain vulnerabilities in theological arguments with regard to their appropriation by the far right, before highlighting prospects for hope in theological arguments and concrete projects.
