doctoral project

Spaces tell stories. Narratological and spatial theory studies on the Gospel of Matthew using the example of Matthew 1–2

In recent years, the topic of “space” has received increased attention in New Testament exegesis and has given rise to a series of studies with different methodological emphases. My dissertation project ties in with this line of research and focuses on Matthew’s genealogy and infancy narratives (Mt 1–2). Using an analytical framework that combines narratological and spatial theory categories, the narrative structures are examined to see how they open up different spatial dimensions and what significance these spaces have for Matthew's Christology. The focus is on the observation that different spatial dimensions in Matthew 1–2 intertwine and that both characters and concrete places exemplify different forms of spatial appropriation and perception. Places such as Bethlehem and Jerusalem, for example, appear not only as settings, but as symbolically condensed spaces where the events of salvation take place. Using the pericopes in Mt 1–2 as examples, the paper outlines how Matthew's Christology can be recognized as a space-related interpretive process.
