A new handbook born at the Brandt School brings Global South perspectives to peace and conflict studies

The project was born out of a 2018 alumni reunion of committed and like-minded graduates. The volume is edited by former Brandt School colleagues Dr. Siddharth Tripathi and Prof. Dr. Solveig Richter, who were both working at the Brandt School when the project began. Dr. Tripathi and fellow authors Dr. Pablo Andrés Ramos, Dr. Steve Wakhu Khaemba and Dr. Jalale Getachew Birru, first previewed this book at the Brandt School’s May 2024 alumni meeting.

Among the contributors are Brandt School professor Achim Kemmerling and former MPP student Sushobhan Parida, who authored the chapter “Conflict and Social Justice.” In their chapter, Parida and Prof. Kemmerling critique classic Eurocentric theories of justice by foregrounding perspectives from the Global South. Their critiques carry significant policy implications, particularly for debates on social justice during political regime transitions and for addressing and repairing the legacies of colonialism.

The handbook stands as a testament to the enduring intellectual community of the Brandt School and its role in shaping critical, globally engaged scholarship.
