Research-at-Risk
At the Brandt School our aim is not only being excellent ourselves, but also helping others becoming excellent. Research and higher education face an increasingly hostile environment in many contexts, and become more and more risky activities. These problems are compounded in many countries of the Global South, as these often lack resources and recognition to make their voices heard in the global marketplace of ideas.
For this reason, we contribute to building up a support structure for those in need. Our key goals are:
- Helping universities and institutions of higher education and research in autocratic contexts.
- Giving support to institutions from the Global South and helping (young) scholars from the Global South to establish a career in research and education.
- Joining global initiatives that support those at risk.
Objectives
Jointly with EIPCC, we have established cooperations with several universities in the Global South (see also website with international partners www.uni-erfurt.de/en/brandtschool/the-school/initiatives/internationalization). We have been teaching courses jointly with universities in Mexico, Indonesia, South Africa to name but a few. We have joint publication projects especially designed for early-stage researchers from the Global South. See for instance, Prof. Grimm’s edited volume on Public Policy Research in the Global South, or a special issue, as well as a forthcoming edited volume on South-North Policy Learning.
We also are part of initiatives such as off university, partner with well-known institutions such as Kiron e.V., as well as contribute to research projects working on researchers-at-risk. We also support a sustainable and permanent research support infrastructure for those in need. Our specialization on social entrepreneurship has stimulated various social projects helping researchers, educators and students at risk (see for example here). Finally, we have hosted scholars at risk at our institution from various countries in crises.
