Myanmar today: With Poetry and Courage against Tyranny

Post-doctoral fellow Jasmin Lorch moderated a conversation between US-Burmese author Wendy Law-Yone and Burmese freelance journalist Thin Lei Win at the Berlin International Literature Festival on 10 September 2021.

After the parliamentary elections at the end of 2020, from which the party of democratically elected State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi once again emerged as the winner, the military in Myanmar instigated a coup on February 1, 2021, and imposed martial law. Since then, the military has used deadly force against protesters and opposition. More than 30 poets have been imprisoned, because »poetry, charisma and courage are a deadly blend against any tyranny«, according to poet Ko Ko Thett, a guest at ilb 2018. But where do Myanmar and the opposition stand today? Post-doctoral fellow Jasmin Lorch moderated a conversation with author Wendy Law-Yone, Thin Lei Win and other guests.
