Language Acquisition and Language Teaching
The Chair of English Didactics with a focus on language teaching and learning research deals with all aspects of the learning and teaching of the English language as well as English-speaking cultures and literatures in its research and teaching.
Our courses are aimed at students of elementary school, secondary school, vocational school, special education school, and the dual study programme for secondary schools.
In the English didactics program, prospective teachers acquire a sound theoretical, practical, and empirical foundation in English language teaching. A particular focus is placed on research-based learning: students develop their own questions, systematically analyze language learning processes, and gain insights into science-oriented teaching development. At the same time, we are particularly committed to the professionalization of prospective teachers by systematically combining subject-specific, didactic, pedagogical, and digital skills.
The school internship in English plays a central role in this. It offers students the opportunity to test their subject-specific didactic knowledge in real teaching situations, carry out specific observation tasks, and reflectively evaluate their experiences using scientific categories. In this way, it contributes significantly to continuous professionalization throughout the course of study.
In addition, the program provides insights into the historical development of English language teaching, its objectives, and its educational policy framework.

Current Issues
New regulations for master's theses
Submission of an exposé is now mandatory for master's students
If you would like to write your master's thesis with us, you must now submit an exposé in advance. This should comprise approximately two A4 pages of continuous text (excluding the bibliography) and follow the style sheet of our department (see here www.uni-erfurt.de/fileadmin/fakultaet/philosophische/Sprachwissenschaft/Sprachlehr_und_lernforschung/StyleSheetEnglischdidaktik.pdf). In the exposé, you should briefly summarize your research topic, the current state of research, and the methods you intend to use. The exposé should not be a perfect summary of your work, but rather provide you and us with an overview of your project. Changes can of course always be made during the writing process.
After you submit your exposé, we will decide internally who will conduct the initial review. As a rule, this will be your preferred supervisor, but in exceptional cases we may assign you to someone else.
Please note the following steps:
1. Contact your preferred supervisor in good time (i.e., by the end of November at the latest for processing during the summer semester, and by mid-June at the latest for processing during the winter semester) and discuss a rough topic with them.
2. Have your supervisor enroll you in the Moodle course for Master's students in English Didactics by this point at the latest.
3. Write the two-page exposé.
4. Submit it by email to your preferred supervisor. Deadline for submission in winter with processing in the summer semester: December 12, 2025. Deadline for submission in summer with processing in the winter semester: June 29, 2026.
5. You will receive an email with the details of the person who will supervise you by the beginning of the year (processing in the summer semester) or mid-July (processing in the winter semester) at the latest.
6. You can send the application to your supervisor for signature and then submit it to the ESE (further information on applying for a topic: www.uni-erfurt.de/erfurt-school-of-education/studium/masterarbeit/thema-finden-beantragen).
